This, the smallest region in metropolitan France, is tucked away in its
northeast corner - a hidden beauty. It's divided into two departments, Bas
Rhin in the north and Haut Rhin in the south. Bordering both Germany and
Switzerland, it's squeezed between the Vosges Mountains to the west and the
River Rhine on the German border. As you'd expect from this close proximity
and the fact that it has, in the past, been under German rule, the area is a
rich cultural hotpot, taking the best elements from its neighbouring
countries and incorporating them into its own unique world. Perhaps the main
foreign influence here is on the food. Considered one of top destinations in
France for gourmet meals, the area has some delightful specialties such as;
the meat platter, Choucroute; fried trout; and Kougelhopf, a large pudding
made with almonds and raisins. It's also the purveyor of over 40 different
kinds of pates and is the home of France's No. 1 selling beer, Kronenbourg.
We're not forgetting the wine of course, and let's face it, with over 90
varieties that'd pretty hard to do! Thanks to the region's narrow shape, you
can follow its Route du Vin through 70 miles of green countryside, rocky
hills and winemaking villages, sampling famous vintages like Riesling, Tokay
and Sylvaner.
