This is the northern department of Alsace and the home of the region's
capital, Strasbourg. Its name means Base of the Rhine, and the great river
plays an important part in both the area's geography and its appeal. The
region is split down the middle in terms of its landscape. To the west are
beautiful mountains and the east is the territory of the sprawling Alsace
Plain. Dark green vineyards and rustic villages speckle the view and rolling
fields and meadows fill in the gaps. You'll also find one of the most
impressive forests in France, Haguenau, close to the town of the same name.
Add to this the majestic river, and whatever scenery you're into you'll find
something to appreciate here. Lead crystals have long been mined in the
region, and are made into stunningly beautiful Lalique statuettes, often in
clear blues and pinks. Apart from making excellent decorations, wine, beer,
and food, the locals are also famous for their warm welcomes. This is a
tradition that extends itself to the huge city of Strasbourg, and a trip
here is always worthwhile. You'll find culture, shopping and over 2000 years
of history, and it's also home to the only airport in Bas Rhin, Strasbourg
International (aka Entzheim), so you're likely to end up there at some
point! Its capital Strasbourg
a hub of European activity. Certain areas here, because of its
prominence is very busy indeed. Good communication routes mean
you can get
here with ease. Touring around there is much to see and do as you
would expect from a cultural centre such as this.
