Colmar Hotels Colmar France Hotel Accommodation Colmar

With its half-timbered pink, yellow and blue houses, Colmar looks like a town designed by a storyteller and coloured in by a child. This is no bad thing however, and its unique look merely enhances its creditability as an essential destination. The town offers two trails for visitors: one to be taken during the day, and the other at night. They both take in some fascinating sights, such as the Covered Market; The Dominican Church, which holds local painter Martin Schongaur's 1473 masterpiece The Virgin of the Rosebush; Little Venice; and the Bartholdi Museum, converted from the old house of the man who sculpted the Statue of Liberty. It's worth doing both the night and day trails, as you'll see, when the imaginative lighting system flickers to life after the sun goes down, making the building's colours all the more wonderful. The Little Venice area is also due a special mention. This is where you'll find small canals, the aged leather market, and the most beautiful of the coloured houses (did we mention the green ones with brown beams that look like they're made from mint chocolate chip ice cream?). The town also has the accolade of being the driest in France, with a yearly precipitation of just 550mm. This makes it perfect for wine making, and some of the best white whines in the country are produced and sold here. During the world wars much of Colmar was destroyed. The modern look of the rebuilt city bears withness to this. Colmar was named after the Colombarium tower. Although a resort as it was to Charlemagne it was made a powerful one. Later it was made into a fortified market town. Frederic II gifted this fine city with imperial status. Local conflicts here with neibours like Strasbourg scar its history. The soldiers of Cardinal Richelieu came here in 1634 and King Louis XIII became the cities protector. The museums in Colmar are worth a look when you are visiting. Musee Unterlinden houses a 16th century alterpiece in what was a convent chapel.
