Situated in the northern part of Mulhouse this is an interesting town in its own right. It's home to four thousand years of heritage and loves to celebrate its identity via some exciting little festivals. At the beginning of this millennium, the town was awarded the prestigious Deux Fleurs (Two Flowers) Award for its beautiful and varied floral displays; and its dedication to pleasing the eye hasn't yielded since! Its parks, gardens, meadows and orchards add to its charm, almost making you want to stay here all day, rather than getting down to Mulhouse to see the sights! The town takes its name from two local rivers, the Ill; which carries on through Strasbourg and into the Rhine; and Le Quatelbach. Water is, therefore, a prominent fixture here, and has worked its way into local legend to explain the nickname of the townspeople (The Moon Fishermen). The story goes that three locals, a little drunk after a night out, rested by a fountain in the town square, and, after noticing something shiny, tried to scoop it from its waters. It was only when a passer-by pointed out that it was in fact the reflection of the moon that the men realised the foolishness of their actions, and (unfortunately for the Illzachois) the name stuck!
