In the centre, you'll find the spectacular Notre Dame Cathedral made from pink limestone. It rests on an island created by two branches of the River Ill, a tributary of the Rhine. There's the Oeuvre Notre-Dame (next to the cathedral), the Decorative and Fine Arts museums, and the Musee d'Art Moderne et Contemporian, which houses works by Monet, amongst others. Head west and you'll come to Petite France. Cute, sweetshop coloured houses lining the canals are the norm here, in an area that looks like the setting of a fairytale. Next up on the list: Quartier Allemand (The German Quarter). This is a great district for magnificent architecture, and you just have to see the Palace of the Rhine, catch a show at the Strasbourg National Theatre, and marvel at the stunning neo-Gothic church of Saint-Paul, to get a real flavour for the city. Finally, there's the most prestigious area of town: the Quartier des XV. Here you'll find the Orangery, the largest park in the district. It's also home to some of the buildings that make the city so important: the European Parliament, European Council, and the Court of Human Rights. Strasbourg being at the crossroads of waterways has existed since the Bronze age. In 12 BC the Romans named it Argentoratum. After the fall of the Roman Empire the town was renamed Stratisburgum.
