This south-western region is the largest in France and comes with all the diversity you would expect from an area of its size. For one, it has the longest sandy shoreline in Europe - over 180 miles - stretching from the mouth of the Gironde estuary in the north, right down to the Spanish border. There's also the Continent's largest forest, Les Landes, a stunning 680 square miles of pine trees, criss-crossed by thousands of biking and walking trails. Sticking with nature, some call the Dordogne River the most beautiful in all of France, and it's not hard to see why. Its waters glide slowly through an awe-inspiring landscape, peppered with chateaux, walnut groves, and russet-roofed villages built into white limestone cliffs. It's the perfect territory for a tranquil canoe trip. Aquitaine is often referred to as a 'Cradle of the Arts' thanks to its abundance of prehistoric sights, such as the ancient cave paintings at Lascaux and the 1,000 castles dotted around the region.

Many castles and fortifications from when this area was caught up in the conflict between England and France La Brede, an ancient family home of Montesquieuis worth a visit.
