Sitting at the heart of France, on the tip of the Massif Central, this is the northernmost department of the sprawling Auvergne region. Flatter than its southern neighbours, it nevertheless enjoys some of the best scenery nature has to offer. This includes the magical Troncais Forest. It was also the origin of family members destined to become kings, men like Louis's XIV and XVI, amongst others. Why is this so important today? Because it means over 500 castles, medieval fortresses and stately homes lay scattered across Allier, all waiting to be discovered.
