Cantal is one of France's best kept secrets. Hidden amongst the western
hills of the Massif Central - it's a department in the country's rural
heartland - a paradise for outdoors enthusiasts and adventurers. It shares
its star attraction, Parc Naturel Regional des Volcans d'Auvergne (Auvergne
Volcano Park), with its neighbour Puy-de-Dome. Cantal, however, has the
special claim to fame of containing Europe's biggest volcanic massif. This
range is known as the Monts du Cantal and is the oldest in Central France.
All the peaks here can be ascended easily, without resorting to advanced
climbing gear. Many say that because of its size, the Cantal section of the
Massif Central offers the best walks in the entire range. It's certainly a
beautiful area, with uncut hay meadows and a vast range of colourful
orchids, maiden pinks and yellow gentians populating its surface during the
spring and summer months. Waterfalls add yet more charm, and there are many.
Some of them have no name, yet would arguably constitute popular tourist
destinations had they been elsewhere, not so far off the beaten track. Away
from the hills, you'll discover yet more hidden qualities, such as the
string of delightful villages and selection of Romanesque churches and
castles. This is also the prime cheese making department of Auvergne, so
make sure you sample at least one of its five famous brands. The nutty
flavoured Salers, and of course the famous Cantal cheese itself (one of the
