Auvergne's capital and largest city, Clermont-Ferrand is a comprehensive
destination in which to set your base for a holiday in the region. Situated
on the flat Limagne Plain in Puy-de-Dome, it's bordered by volcanoes on
three sides. One of the oldest cities in France, it inevitably harbours a
rich history, including strong ties to the Gaulic armies of 1st Century BC,
and their battles with the Romans. To this end, an imperial statue of the
chieftain Vercingetorix, sitting atop his horse, stands in the Place de
Jaude, the city's most popular public square. It was crafted by the sculptor
Bartholdi, the man who also created the Statue of Liberty. Another immediate
landmark is the black cathedral. Made from volcanic stone in the 4th
Century, it's a unique sight and towers above the rest of the city. Many
museums add to Clermont's worth as an historical treasure trove. The Musee
d'art Roger-Quilliot is one. An art gallery located in the aged Montferrand
Quarter, it features over 2,000 works of art, including paintings and
sculptures. Musee Bargoin on the other hand, named after the famous
pharmacist, houses a collection of archaeological artefacts from pre-history
through to the Gallo-Roman period. Many come to the city for the skiing and
snowboarding at nearby Super Besse on Mount Sanay, choosing the Clermont
because of its large size (by Auvergne's standards) and resources. It's also
visited in increasing numbers each year for its short film festival, which
