Named after its famous dormant volcano, Puy-de-Dome is the central department of Auvergne. Home to 80-plus volcanic craters, it's an amazing place, both to see and to explore. It's home to the highest mountain in the Massif Central, Puy de Sancy, which reaches 1886 metres. It can be found to the south of the department, in the Monts Dore, where the two lofty plateaux of Artense and Cezallier also lie. Closer to Clermont-Ferrand, you'll also find the historical plateau of Gergovie. It was once the site of a great Gaulic fortress and the setting for what would prove to be Vercingetorix's last victory over Caesar and his invading Roman forces. Further north, you'll discover a charming little village whose name you just might recognise - Volvic, origin of the famous volcanic mineral water. In fact, there is varied assortment of pretty little towns and villages in the department. Thiers is well worth a visit. Clinging to the foothills of the Central in ascending blocks, like rows in a Greek amphitheatre, it's a surreal yet beautiful sight. It's also the knife-making centre of France, and a trip to one of the workshops to watch the craftsmen in full flow is a guaranteed treat. The small village of Laschamps is also a curio. It's known for a natural phenomenon in which its magnetic poles are reversed. So unique is this that its name has been adopted as a scientific term to describe such an event.
