This town, in the Cote d'Or department, lies at the southern tip of
the glorious Golden Hillside, and is known as the Wine Capital of Burgundy.
Whichever Bourgogne label you're looking for, you'll find it here, in one of
the many, many specialist outlets or cellars. Most of these are housed in
half-timbered medieval buildings, and the town's extensive collection of
them is highly regarded. You can also find many a rarity at the annual wine
sale, organised by the famously benign Hospices de Beaune. It's put on at
the town's exemplary landmark - the extravagant red and golden-roofed Hotel
Dieu, a worthy sightseeing stop on any day. Other essential attractions are
the Musee des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum), which features a fine
collection of works from (amongst others) noted local painter Felix Ziem;
and the Marey Museum, named after the inventor of chronophotography (the
prelude to cinema). The Burgundy Wine Museum is, of course, another
favourite. It contains tools of the trade dating back to the 14th century,
as well as a fascinating re-telling of the industry's past in the region.
Both the N74 and A31 roads from Dijon run straight along the Cote d'Or hills
to Beaune, making for a spectacular drive in, and the perfect introduction
