Hotels Yonne France Cheap Yonne Hotels Guide
With no truly large towns or cities, Yonne is perhaps the most peaceful
department of an already tranquil Burgundy. It also breaks with local
tradition a little by opting for cider, rather than wine as its primary
drink of choice. There are, however, still many renowned vineyards here,
such as the ones producing Chablis around the sleepy capital of Auxerre.
This is also a good place from which to explore Yonne (both the area and the
river that gave it its name) via boat. Sailing through Auxerre alone you'll
be met simultaneously by two flamboyant Gothic cathedrals on either bank, as
well as rows of elaborately timbered cottages. It's not the only historic
town on a river here, however. Vezelay, a little further south, can boast
the largest and most famous Romanesque church in France - the 12th-century
Basilique Sainte-Madeleine. As well as its stunning design, it once
contained what was thought to be the tomb of St Mary Magdalene (and still
houses some relics of hers), and has subsequently become one of the most
oft-visited places in Europe. The small town of Avallon is another historic
treat. Once a practical fortress, its city walls and several of its flanking
towers still remain today and are open for exploration. It's also become
known (as has many a town in this region) for its gastronomy, and both
biscuits and gingerbread are manufactured and sold here. When you want to find where to stay in Yonne this is the place to book your hotel room.
