and Cornwall in Britain, Finistere (meaning the End of the Earth) is the
last remaining segment of a civilisation that's been almost eclipsed by the
rest of its country. This is still a land, however, in which the folk songs
of ages continue to drift across the hills, and colourful dances and
festivals ring out from practically every town square. The department is
also home to the most spectacular selection of coast in the region, with
beaches and complex fjords coming face to face with the Atlantic Ocean.
Although woodland is scarce here, natural beauty is not. The splendid
Armorique Natural Park starts in the west, near the tiny medieval port of La
Faou and stretches eastwards, the entire length of the department; covering
crashing waves, open fields and the mystical Black Mountains. The capital
and largest city is Brest. Constructed around a stunning deep-water harbour,
it's home to some great sights, like its 3rd-century castle and Museum of
Fine Arts. Elsewhere, in the smaller settlements, the Breton language is
more prevalent. One place in particular that enjoys celebrating its Celtic
heritage is the southern town of Quimper, where the Cornouaille Festival is
held. Known nationwide, its combination of music and dance acts as both a
