As we travel further east in Brittany, the Breton language begins to thin out, although the accent does not. Here, a traditional slice of France opens itself up for exploration. The department of Ille-et-Vilaine (named after its two largest rivers) forms an historic border with Normandy - designated as much with prestigious chateaux as it is with signposts. It's on this frontier that many battles of the Breton people were waged, and numerous fortresses, including those in the small medieval towns of Fougeres and Vitre, still stand in excellent condition. Despite only possessing a small amount of shoreline compared to its regional counterparts, Ille-et-Vilaine's 35 miles of Emerald Coast still manage to pack in a commendable amount of sights. Cancale (population approx 5,000), is known as the Oyster Capital of France. It's from here that Louis XIV had his oysters imported to Versailles; and today, it's famed for its hefty servings of these and other seafoods. A little further inland, on the area's confluence of rivers, lie a number of towns that have been given the tag Little Venice. Included in these is Redon, which has a number of waterways criss-crossed with resplendent bridges. Barring regional capital Rennes (approx population 215,000), the majority of the department's southern section is open countryside, populated with woodland and ancient sites of Druid ritual.
