Brushed by the Gulf Stream and sheltered from the Atlantic by its large natural harbour, Bretagne's southern department enjoys a climate more befitting of the Mediterranean. Its name means Little Sea in Breton, and describes what is now the Gulf of Morbihan - home to a number of inhabited islands. Many more exist further out to sea - the largest being Belle Ile (Beautiful Island), where, in order to adhere to local by-laws, even the houses are required to be painted in attractive pastel colours. The coast is great sailing territory (for both amateurs and professionals), and many yacht races are held up and down the shore. Carnac, back on the mainland, is home to one of the most important megalithic sites in Western Europe - its 3,000 Standing Stones. The various dolmens and menhirs here pre-date even Celtic rule, and according to legend, are said to be a Roman Legion turned to stone by the wizard Merlin. The town of Lorient is home to an historic submarine base - now deserted and tourable, as well as the Interceltique (Celtic Music Festival), which draws crowds of up to 300,000! Inland, Morbihan is a pleasant sight; characterised by lush green forests, such as that of Broceliande, which is home to herds of deer and the occasional wild boar.
