Constructed on the meeting point of the Ille and Vilaine rivers (at the heart of the department), Rennes is the capital of both its respective district and of all of Brittany / Bretagne. Effectively split in half by the Vilaine, the city divides itself between the historic Old Town to the south and the lively student bars and clubs north of the river. The 'old' town centre (which was re-built in the 18th century after the city was nearly destroyed by fire) is particularly attractive, boasting an exquisite line of elegant shops. Fine examples of medieval architecture still remain as well, including the imperial stone gates of Les Portes Mordelaises and some 6-storey timbered storefronts. The city is also home to two of Bretagne's defining buildings: the 16th-century St Pierre Cathedral and the Parliament of Brittany (arguably the most important structure in the land). Recently, a number of festivals have been inserted into the calendar, increasing its cultural value considerably. They include the music festival Les Transmusicales; the cinematic celebration Travelling; and Les Tombees de la Nuit (Nightfalls), an immortalisation of street art. A slightly more regular event is the Saturday morning market (one of the biggest in France), which attracts shoppers from all over Brittany.
