While Saint-Malo's reputation as Bretagne's most visited city was undoubtedly helped by its status as a ferry port, it was soon to garner a following purely on its own merits. A medieval walled citadel on the north coast, its population of 50,000 has now been known to quadruple in the summer months due to tourism. Its affluent past as a corsair town (and at one point as its own republic) led to the assortment of architectural riches to be found here, including the re-modelled Cathedral of St Vincent and the Chateau of Saint-Malo. The fortifications of the walled section (known as La Ville Intra-Muros) had to be re-constructed after damage during World War II, but they continue to sustain the bustling atmosphere of old; today fuelled by chic boutiques and fashionable pavement cafes. Although it was once its own island, Intra-Muros is now linked to the mainland via a causeway, and includes some modern attractions as well, such as the Tropical Aquarium. Other sights include the Corsair's House, the 300 figures sculpted into the cliffs at Rotherneuf, and the National Fort (located on its own islet and reachable at low tide). Also across the ramparts you'll find a selection of long sandy beaches, plus water perfect for windsurfing, sailing, jet-skiing and a number of other watersports.
