Vannes is the capital of the Morbihan department and its most-visited town. It lies on the northern coast of the large gulf from which the area takes its name, overlooking dozens of picturesque islands. The central old town is still surrounded by its original medieval ramparts, and the district of multicoloured-timbered buildings within has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. As you'll discover, the original settlement was small, but despite the narrow streets, the Cathedral of St Pierre was still squeezed in and continues to be visible from every part of the new town. As well as looking the part, the town also played an important role in French history, holding the 1532 summit at which the Duchy of Brittany was to become united with the rest of the country. Today, Vannes is the site of many top class museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts; the archaeological museum (situated in the Chateau Gaillard); and the Musee de Automates, which holds a vast collection of 19th-century toys. The town also boasts a butterfly house (La Papillonneraie) and France's largest aquarium, containing 50-plus tanks, which hold 600 species of both Atlantic and tropical marine life. The surrounding Pays de Vannes is home to two excellent nature reserves at Sene and Larmor-Baden (both great for bird watching), as well as some sumptuous woodland in its northern hills.
