Behind this building lies the cobbled Place du Parliament and a labyrinth of tiny streets and hidden squares which all spiral around the Gothic Church of St Pierre. There are two medieval gateways which still remain in place from the old city walls.

There's a wealth of deep history here - from Monument aux Girondins - bronze creation of sea life and fountains across to the Grand Theatre built on a Roman Temple and now home to the Opera, Dance and Musical concerts.

The city is split in to 12 areas - each known as a particular "Quarter" - many of them named after the saints - take time to explore each one in turn - could take a few visits.
