Romantic countryside, colourful landscapes and the beauty of the Camargue are very much for the discerning. Take a day or two to go horse back riding and discover being at one with nature, canter down on the beach and through the countryside to feel truly alive.

Arles itself is a pretty town steeped in history and a place Van Gogh spent time in. Monuments and reminders of past days, bull fighting - the bull stays alive here, festivals and music are to be found here. Place du Forum is the old Roman square, shaded by trees. Place de la Republique is the main square and where you will find the 50ft blue porphyry obelisk.

On Saturday's there is a market where you will be delighted by displays of colour, fruits, vegetables, olives, flowers, cheeses, poultry and meats, hats, sponges, olive oil soap and clothing. Head for Boulevard des Lices and Boulevard Emile Combes.
