Picture of Hôtel Montmajour

Arles is steeped in history and was once the home of Van Gogh who whilst living here was inspired to create over 200 paintings. The town is filled with monuments, museums, ancient artwork, gargoyles, castle walls and the Roman ruins of the theatre.

Jardin D'ete is where you can relax a while and for a little excitement visit the Roman Amphitheatre - Arlenes which was built in the 1st Century and is now used for bullfighting - quite a spectacular display and more enjoyable when you know the bull gets to live.

Saturday is market day here and this is where you would head for Boulevard des Lices and Boulevard Emile Combes where you will find every delightful food - fresh fruits and vegetables, olives, poultry and meats and cheeses of the region - delicious. Gifts, hats, natural sponges, olive oil soap, tablecloths and clothing are also on offer. Hustle and bustle and where you get to mix with the locals. Enjoy the atmosphere.

Fancy a day out on horse back.....then this is the countryside to do it in - Camargue is famous for its wild horses. Today you can take treks over a few days if you wish. See the wildlife, enjoy the beaches and breath in the countryside air in a completely vibrant and free spirited way.

Welcome to Arles.
