on the Loire. Neat, refined and laden with timber-framed houses, it occupies
a prime position on the river, overseen by its splendid 14th-century castle,
the Chateau d'Amboise. The chateau suffered inauspicious beginnings, which
saw it seized by King Charles VII, after its owner was convicted of plotting
a royal assassination. Two centuries later, it played host to Leonardo da
Vinci, whose prototype for an armoured tank can still be seen in the
grounds. Leonardo spent his final years in Amboise, residing in Close Luce:
a mansion situated 500 metres from the chateau. Today, the building acts as
a museum, featuring 40 models of his machines as well as exhibitions on
local history. If you're having trouble fitting all of the Loire chateaux
into your trip you can always take in the Mini Chateaux Park, to the east of
town, instead. As the name implies, this charming 2-hectare park is home to
all the local heritage sights recreated in model form, including 44 castles,
2,000 bonsai trees and 10,000 figurines! Also close by is the Val de Loire
Aquarium, one of the largest freshwater aquariums in Europe; it's home to
both indigenous and tropical fish, as well as turtles, sharks and
