Hotels Chartres France Cheap Chartres Hotels GuideApproach Chartres from any direction and you'll be met with the same sight -
the colossal frame of one of the biggest cathedrals in Europe. The town's
Notre Dame was constructed between 1194 and 1220, and is considered to be
the finest example of High Gothic architecture in all of France. Pilgrims
have journeyed here for centuries, primarily to view the Sancta Camisia, a
2,000-year-old relic believed to be a tunic belonging to the Blessed Virgin
Mary. Although the cathedral is easily the most noticeable feature of
Eure-et-Loire's capital, it's far from the only attraction to be enjoyed
here. The Fine Arts Museum, housed in the former Episcopal palace, is well
worth a look for its beautiful selection of tapestries, as well as
exhibitions dedicated to the works of Zurbaran and Maurice de Vlaminck. Many
hidden gems can be found in Chartres' historic districts, which cover over
60 hectares of scenic streets and canals either side of the cathedral. One
of the more unusual attractions is The House of the Picassiette, which,
roughly translated, means the "Picasso of plates". Take one look at it and
you'll see why - mosaics cover every inch of the house - the interior,
exterior, floors, ceilings and even the furniture have all been transformed
into works of art. More colourful design work is on show at the
International Stained Glass Centre. Housed in a listed medieval storehouse,
the Centre reveals the secrets of creating wonderfully ornate windows by way
of some fascinating demonstrations. Situated just 50 metres from the
cathedral, it makes the perfect companion destination to the town's
centrepiece. A look here and you will be able to find where to stay in Chartres. Make your choice of and of the cheap hotels in Chartres, click on any of the pictures for more info and to check on room availability.
