monumental events. It was in the Chateau de Chinon that an adolescent Joan
of Arc sought out the dauphin, the future King Charles VII, amongst his many
courtiers and persuaded him to seize the crown and raise an army to fight
the English. Although now in a ruinous state, the castle still stands high
above the town as an impressive example of one of France's oldest
fortress-chateaux. Inside is a museum to Joan of Arc; featuring paintings,
weapons, sculptures and manuscripts that illustrate her life. In recent
years, Chinon has earned a second claim to fame - its wine. Situated in the
far west of the region, it's encircled by some of the Loire's most
prestigious vineyards, best known for cultivating the Cabernet Franc reds.
Many of the towns charming "caves", or wine cellars, are open to the public
for both tours and sampling sessions, including the particularly enjoyable
Living Museum of Wine and Wine Casks. One of the major champions of the
regional tipple was Chinon's most famous son, the bawdy Renaissance writer
Francois Rabelais. A light-hearted museum to his life and work can be found
