Two rivers lend their names to a district epitomised by waterways and bedecked with chateaux and splendour. Each town in this, Centre's westernmost department, seems to have a grand manor house or castle of its own dwarfing all other buildings (barring the cathedrals of course) and reaching for the clouds. Although the adjective 'fairytale' may be overused, it certainly applies to one place in particular - the Chateau d'Usse. Located on the River Loire, it was the setting for the story Sleeping Beauty, and its multi-towered design was later the inspiration for Cinderella's castle in Disneyland, Florida. Despite its history, however, D'Usse is still neither the grandest nor the most popular chateau in Indre-et-Loire! Those honours are generally contested between Chateau de Chenonceau, which stretches across the entire width of the river; and Chateau d'Amboise - ex-residence of Leonardo da Vinci, whose famous prototype for an armoured tank stands within the grounds. The capital and largest city by miles (literally) is Tours (population 132,000). It's often compared to Paris, due to its abundance of eclectic architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Joue les Tours is the department's second largest town (despite having over 100,000 fewer residents) and has a reputation for producing some of the best wine in France, made almost exclusively from the renowned Cabernet Franc grape. Another town worth investigating for the curious is Descartes, on the River Creuse. The birthplace of the famous philosopher, it later adopted his name and now houses a museum to his life, aptly located in his childhood home.
