It's impossible to pay a visit to Orleans, Centre's capital, without being reminded of its long-standing ties with Joan of Arc. She's immortalised nearly everywhere, from a statue in the town square to a heroic likeness in front of the magnificent Sainte Croix (Holy Cross) Cathedral. The source of this reverence dates from the Siege of Orleans in the 1420s, when Joan, then a teenage peasant girl, broke through the English lines and ended the seemingly interminable stakeout in just nine days. The victory marked the turning point in the Hundred Years' War, and from here Charles VII's revitalised troops set about eradicating the foreign occupancy. The main attraction to bear "The Maid's" name is the Maison de Jeanne d'Arc - a reconstruction of her home that's packed with models and displays that illustrate the siege. There's more to Orleans than a single legacy, however. The Musee des Beaux Arts is well worth a look for its fine collection of portraits from the French school, as well as works by both Renoir and Picasso. Elsewhere, the Gien Museum, housed in an old clay cave, tells the story of fine Gien earthenware from the early 19th century onwards; it also features a spectacular collection of colourful pottery.
