Tours - capital of the department and Centre's largest settlement on the Loire River. Home to 138,000 people, as well as numerous cafes, bars and nightclubs, it's a traditional choice for those not wishing to leave the convenience of the city behind. This is no bland metropolis, however; Tours is well known for its profusion of culture and greenery. In fact, the latter of these has earned it the nickname "Le Jardin de la France" (The Garden of France) and there are several parks located throughout the city. Even Napoleon chipped in, planting the giant cedar tree that stands in front of the flamboyant Gothic cathedral. The Fine Arts Museum, situated in the Palais des Archeveques, is worth visiting just to see its intricate courtyards. If you do get the time to look inside, you'll be able to enjoy paintings by Degas, Delacroix, Rembrandt and Boucher, as well as sculptures by Bourdelle and Jean-Antoine Houdon. Popular parts of town include the medieval quarter, Le Vieux Tours, with its timber-framed, grey-slate-roofed houses, and Place Plumereau, a pleasant open square lined with restaurants and plenty of alfresco dining space. Although it doesn't have a chateau itself, its surrounding region, Touraine, has dozens; all of which are within easy reach of the city.
