The adorable town of Vendome proves that tourism in Centre isn't just confined to the Loire Valley. Situated on the similarly named but lesser-known Loir River, it's a small settlement (population 17,000) that's cut from local stone and camouflaged with creeping vines and hanging baskets. Despite its modest size, there're still plenty of sights in town. The most prominent of these is the ruined castle of the Counts of Vendome, which overlooks proceedings from atop a southern hill. At ground level, the Abbey of the Trinity, built in 1030, is famous (at least locally) for its Biblical connections; most notably, its claim to possess a tear of Jesus' shed at the tomb of Lazarus. Several additional churches and chateaux exist throughout the town, many of which exhibit the 'florid Gothic' style that has come to epitomise this corner of the department. Just past the outskirts lie a completely different type of dwelling - the troglodyte caves of Troo village. Here, residents continue to live in quarters carved directly into the cliff face, and decorating said abodes in lambent colour. Boats are available for hire up and down this part of the Loir, providing a great way to explore both Vendome and its close neighbours.
