Sharing a border with Switzerland, Franche-Comte (Free Country) is France's northern prelude to the Alps. Its own mountain ranges of Jura and the Southern Vosges occupy the region's opposing poles, overlooking a vast expanse of corrugated fields and thick pine forests - in a region described as the Greenest in the Country. Water, unsurprisingly then, plays a big part in the story of France-Comte, from cascading waterfalls and natural springs to glistening rivers and giant reservoirs. The Plateau of a Thousand Ponds in the Vosges is an exceptional sight, and is the prime source of crayfish, a local delicacy. There's more to see in the region than initially meets the eye, however. Below the surface of both land and lake lie a series of 9,000 underground caves and passages, many of which provide great tours and spectacular sound and light shows. The great outdoors (or underdoors) isn't the only place to explore either. Despite having a (relatively) low population of just over a million, the region is home to a strong group of towns known collectively for their rich heritage. The capital, Bresancon is a prime example, with a city centre classed as one of the most beautifully historic in France. It retains Vauban's impressive 17th-century Citadelle atop its hill, as well as St Jean's Cathedral and the Musee des Beaux Arts (one of the finest art galleries outside of Paris) down below.
