Squeezed between Paris and the English Channel is Haute (or Upper) Normandie, one of the most beautiful and historic regions in France. Les Andelys is home to the ruins of Chateau Gaillard (the magnificent castle of Richard the I of England), built at the turn of the 13th century. Even older is Gisors Castle, the 11th-century bastion built by the son of William the Conqueror, which, according to legend, is said to hold the treasure of the Knights Templar. The capital city of Rouen, however, lays claim to being the historical centre of the region. Caught in one of the Seine's many loops, its intricate design is home to many well-preserved medieval buildings, including the Tower of Joan of Arc (where the French heroine was threatened with torture shortly before her death in this very city); and the astounding Gothic Cathedral, which contains the tomb of Richard the Lionheart. The cathedral was another favourite subject of Monet's, as were the white cliffs and his famous garden in the town of Giverny. The garden is now open to the public and today is a must-see as a source of both inspiration and tranquillity, just as it was for him.
