Hauts-de-Seine (109 sq miles) is the smallest of the petite couronne, the small ring of departments that surround Paris. Located to the capital's west, it accounts for the most affluent part of Ile-de-France and is the wealthiest department in the country... translated into touristic terms, this means shops, shops and more shops! The famous district of La Defense is the place to head for the majority of the malls. With its central Grande Arche (the 100 metre by 70 metre modern-day white marble version of the Arc de Triomphe) as its centrepiece, it's easy to spot. The rest of its environs are no less stunning - glass-panelled buildings punctuated by lakes of fountains - in an altogether more futuristic Paris skyline. Somewhat surprisingly then, the department is also one of the greenest in the city, with nigh on 100 parks and gardens scattered around its grounds. Each one has a history. Towards the south, the Parc de Sceaux and its splendid chateau was once the property of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's revered finance minister. It now houses the Ile-de-France Museum. Back in the north, across the Seine from Saint Denis, the 70-hectare Parc de Chanteraines is probably the most diverse of its kind in the department. As well as lines of silver birch and pine trees, an orchard, vegetable garden, diving pool, bathing beach and water activity centre, there's a re-construction of a Norman farm complete with cows, chickens, goats and sheep!
