Despite being just over a mile away from the Boulevard Peripherique (the city centre's ring road) Issy-les-Moulineaux is one of Paris's quieter suburbs. The island park of Saint Germain is both beautiful and uncrowded, a great way to get away from the city without really leaving it at all. Its western half is densely populated with wild plants and flowers and contains two hidden gems - an orchard and a vegetable garden. Much later, after a visit by Pope Jean-Paul II in the 20th century, the Sulpice's adjoining park was renamed in honour of the occasion, to Parc Jean-Paul II! Since 2005 Issy-les-Moulineaux has become better known for new sporting complex - the Palais des Sports. One of the biggest multi-sport centres in Europe - it hosts regular badminton tournaments and serves as a concert and theatre venue as well.
