Nanterre wasn't always a large Parisian suburb. Before the city limits expanded this far it was an agricultural village, which is why every November the streets are submerged in hay and farmers' stalls selling local produce replace the storefronts. For the rest of the year though, Nanterre is one of the more modern districts of Paris. The capital of the Haut-de-Seine department, it incorporates part of the hi-tech La Defense area, including its most prominent landmark - The Grand Arch. If you want a view of the whole of Western Paris then take its elevator up to the top and don't forget your camera! The glass building in the immediate foreground is Les 4 Temps, the department's largest shopping centre - why not have a browse for some chic designer clothes and apparel? Towards the south of town the attractions adopt a more classical tone. The Parc des Impressionists on the banks of the Seine overlooks Impressionist's Isle, the muse and model for many a work by France's great painters of the 19th century. Intriguingly, the roses in the gardens of the Chateau de Malmaison also became famous through their depiction on canvas. Prints of Pierre-Joseph Redoute's floral artworks still sell well today and you can see the real thing at the house, which was once owned by Napoleon and his wife Jospehine de Beauharnais.
