If you see just one sight in Yvelines (and millions a year do) it has to be the magnificent Palace of Versailles - the grandest royal chateau in all of France. Technically it's more of a palace complex - a grand village of extravagant buildings and meticulous sweeping gardens dating from the late 17th century. It's also steeped with history of course. Having been built by Louis XIV, it was later to become the home of Mary Antoinette before finally being seized during the French Revolution, some 100 years after its construction. The department of Yvelines itself is situated just to the west of Paris and there is much more to enjoy here besides the palace. Countryside comes in equal measure with the city suburbs and Rambouillet Forest is a fine example of the former. Hundreds of walks can be taken through its oak and birch trees, where you're likely to spot herds of wild deer and boar. Those who appreciated Yvelines's contrast included Monet, Renoir and Courbet, who all used to frequent the inn still known as the "Maison Fournaise" in Chatou (itself a setting for works by Renoir). Numerous other sights in the area were to give them and others inspiration and you can re-visit many of them on the Impressionist's Trail, which starts in the village of Marly le Roi, just across the Seine.
