Lorraine's three natural parks - the most of any French region - have earned it the nickname The Green Lung. Effectively, this means a land of wooded hills, nature reserves, epic rivers, and literally hundreds of parks and gardens. The region's south is home to the Vosges mountains, a romantic range filled with spa resorts and unspoiled scenery. Nancy, the historic capital of the former Duchy of Lorraine, itself not left wanting on open green spaces, is at its heart, while the cosmopolitan city of Metz, in the north, lends the region an added contemporary touch. The western Meuse department is remembered for its battlefields, which saw some of the most devastating fighting of the First World War. Most notorious was the Battle of Verdun, the war's longest running single conflict, fought for ten months in 1916. Every year, on Armistice Day, Verdun is the sight of a pilgrimage by those wishing to honour the memory of the men who died epitomising the motto "They Shall Not Pass". Crowds on a similar scale often converge at the village of Domremy-la-Pucelle to pay homage to its famous daughter, Joan of Arc, who was born here in 1412. Her family home, Maison Natale de Jeanne d'Arc, still stands, and includes the chamber where she was born. Lorraine is, of course, also the originator of the quiche, France's most popular dish. As well as Quiche Lorraine, the region is known for a range of other culinary delights, including pike marinated in vin gris, wild boar and red wine stew, and venison served with rich wild truffles.
