The beautiful city of Metz, Lorraine's modern age capital, lies on the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers, on the country's northeastern periphery. Despite changing hands between France and Germany on several occasions, the city's heritage remains distinctly French. It's home to the nation's oldest church, the Eglise St-Pierre-aux-Nonnains; its longest-running theatre, the Arsenal; and one of its most historic cathedrals, the original St Etienne. Like much of the city, the cathedral was built with a distinctive yellow limestone that glimmers under the sun's rays. It's also known for its large nave (the third highest in France) and its numerous gothic- and modern-style stained glass windows, some of which were painted by Marc Chagnall. Housed in a deconsecrated 17th-century monastery, the Musee de la Cour d'Or (also called the Musee d'Art et d'Historie) contains many fine artefacts from Metz's crowded historical timeline. Among them are some excellently preserved examples of Medieval art; German, Flemish and French paintings; and even actual Gallo-Roman baths, which were discovered by accident when the building was extended. Indeed, much of Metz's history is open air. Being a border city, it has been fortified over the centuries, and many of its walls, including some designed by defences expert Vauban, can still be seen around town. The oldest extant example is the Porte des Allemands, which was begun in the 13th century, and features two impressive 15th-century bastions on its exterior. For some of the best views of the city, take the narrow wooden bridge from the cathedral to the island of Petit Saulcy. The isle not only provides some of the most flattering angles of St Etienne, but also of the Arsenal and the pretty square of Place St-Louis.
