For those wishing to visit a less tourist-heavy French city, Nancy is a real find. Lorraine's old capital has lost none of its stately charm over time, and much of its appeal hails from a bygone age. Many of the top sights can be found around the vast Place Stanislas, which is an attraction in itself. The Place, a UNESCO world Heritage Site, was laid in 1752 to honour Louis XV, and is surrounded by no less than five palaces. Louis' central statue was disposed of in the French Revolution and replaced by one of King Stanislas, a Polish monarch buried in Nancy. An opulent feel remains, however, helped in no small part by the rococo gilded iron gates at the main entrance, the flamboyant fountains of Neptune and Amphitrite, and the imperial Arc de Triomphe. The Musee des Beaux Arts, also on the square, is home to a healthy assortment of works from various European masters, including paintings by Rubens, Manet, Delacroix, Caravaggio and Picasso; as well as sculptures by Rodin; and an exceptional collection of Daum glassware. Other attractions include one of France's premier historical museums, the Musee Historique Lorraine, on the Grand Rue; and the Musee de l'Ecole, which preserves many pieces of the Art Nouveau furniture, jewellery and glassware that saw Nancy rival Paris as a hotbed for the movement in the 20th century.
