Situated halfway between Lorraine's two main cities, Metz and Nancy, Pont-a-Mousson is often overlooked, although its location makes it an ideal base for exploring the region. The town, whose name literally means Bridge to Mousson, has served as an important crossing point on the Moselle river since the Middle Ages. The first recorded bridge was built here in the 9th century, but due to heavy fighting in both world wars, the current crossing is post WWII. Fortunately, the rest of Pont-a-Mousson came through these conflicts relatively unscathed. Its biggest attraction is the grand Abbaye de Premontres, a former Norbetine church on the riverbank, which is now used as a concert hall and intermittent art gallery. Begun in 1705, and built in the Baroque style, it's most notable for its trinity of vertigo-inducing spiral staircases, each housed in a separate convent. Just across the river is the town square, or, more accurately, triangle, the elegant Place Duroc. It's surrounded by a fine selection of arcaded houses, many of which date from the 16th century. By far the most striking is the Maison des Sept Peches Capitaux, also known as the Chateau d'Amour, which is adorned with caryatids representing the seven deadly sins. The best view of the town can be had from the top of the Butte de Mousson, a couple of miles east of the Moselle. Also worth a look atop the hill are the ruins of a 13th-century fort, which was constructed by the town's founder, Thibaut II, and is Mousson's oldest surviving construction.
