Until the 1850s, Lourdes was like any other Pyrenean mountain village - quiet, pastoral and secluded. This all changed in 1858, however, when a local 14-year-old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous (now Saint Bernadette) claimed to have witnessed 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the remote Grotto of Massabielle. Lourdes soon became a popular pilgrimage site, and today it's the most visited shrine in the Roman Catholic world, attracting 6 million visitors a year. The Grotto itself is open to pilgrims both day and night, and Mass is held every day. Behind it is the Miraculous Spring, which allegedly first spouted during Bernadette's ninth vision, when she scraped at the earth with her hands. The spring, which has been known for its curative powers since 1873, has been the site of numerous unexplainable recoveries ever since. The magnificent Lourdes Basilica was constructed above the Grotto in 1876, after pilgrims overcrowded the original chapel. Built in a Roman-Byzantine style, it tells the story of St Bernadette's visions through a series of stained glass windows. Even if you're not here for the pilgrimage sites, Lourdes' position in the foothills of the Pyrenees makes it an excellent base for a holiday in the mountains. The town itself is also home to a wax museum; historical museum; Little Lourdes, a miniature version of the town; and a small cinema that plays The Song of Bernadette, the 1943 film of Bernadette's life story.
