Boulogne-sur-Mer also features a 13th-century castle with remarkably preserved ramparts, which were themselves built on the ruins of ancient Roman walls. This fortified site is probably the best preserved medieval fortification in northern France. Boulogne-sur-Mer's belfry is also a familiar sight for people who know the city, including Britons who have just got off the ferry. Those who have already stopped in Boulogne-sur-Mer keep coming back, as they know it is an absolutely gorgeous city.
