Dunkirk Hotels Dunkirk France Hotel Accommodation ReservationsThe name 'Dunkirk' still evokes images of the heroic rescue mission that
took place here in World War II, so many years ago. While it may be tough to
disassociate Dunkirk (or Dunkerque) from its past, it's also hard to ignore
its touristic recovery, which has resulted in a bright, refreshing seaside
city. Much of the reason for its revival can be attributed to the attractive
seafront, which, along with 80 percent of the town's buildings, was re-built
after extensive damage in the war. Additionally, the expansive sandy
beaches, which once served as a pragmatic landing point, now act as the
perfect place for rest and relaxation, offering superb views across La
Manche. Another crowd-pleaser is the Carnaval de Dunkerque - an amazing
month-long celebration that ushers in the spring season. It's a festival
filled with traditional song and dance, and crowned with a fantastical
parade of colourful 'giants' - towering historical effigies hauled through
the packed streets. Museums are another important part of the port's
identity. Paintings by French, Flemish and Dutch artists - all dating from
the 16th century - are exhibited at the Fine Arts Museum in the Place
General de Gaulle, alongside an intriguing gallery on natural history. The
Memorial du Souvenir holds a number of items related to Operation Dynamo,
including weapons, maps, uniforms and a German motorcycle. It's housed
within fortifications constructed in 1874, which were used as the makeshift
headquarters of the French army in 1940. Dunes and sandy beaches with centuries of maritime history. Many museums and a wonderful architectural heritage to eplore. There is also a grand Carnival Weekend. This three day carnival at the beginning of Lent is a wonder to experence. Thousands of people in costumes carrying huge umbrellas and always a chourus of traditional songs all the way through the parades.
