Welcome to the largest, and indeed, highest region in the country - Rhone-Alpes. This is the place in France to go for skiing, snowboarding, or any other winter sport - and is home to the biggest ski area anywhere in the world - Les Trois Vallees (The Three Valleys). You don't need to be sporty to appreciate the Rhone-Alpes, however, and sightseers will revel in scenery that includes Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva. Nearly 200 miles west, on the opposite border, the Massif Central paints a similar (although slightly tamer) backdrop of the wilderness of Auvergne, preceded by the glistening River Loire. The region's own great river, the Rhone, enters from Switzerland, before severing the aforementioned mountain ranges and heading down to Provence. Its valley (and that of the Saone), provide the ideal fertile conditions for some of France's most prestigious vineyards, producing labels such as Beaujolais nouveau and the famous roses and reds of the Cotes du Rhone appellation. The region is also renowned for its many sprawling nature reserves, boasting two national and six regional parks. Vercors, at 17,000 hectares, is the largest in France, and contains over 3,000 km of paths trodden by ibex, mountain goats and wild boar (as well as by tourists).
